One of the more legendary feuds from the history of independent wrestling came when Samoa Joe & CM Punk had a trilogy of matches in the early 2000’s.
These were two rising stars proving they were going to reach the top of the industry, and are matches that have stood the test of time. In 2023, fans got a chance to see another match between Punk & Joe – taking place in the Owen Hart Memorial Tournament. It was an amazing moment, and one Joe knew would come eventually.
Samoa Joe Was Not Surprised To Be Once Again Facing Another Old Foe In CM Punk
While appearing on the Under The Ring podcast, Samoa Joe would reflect on his recent match with CM Punk. Joe had the following to say about the match coming together.
“It’s really to be expected. I’ve found that throughout my career, the same cast of characters pop up. Punk is definitely in that realm of those cast of characters. To see us back in the ring against each other one more time, it’s no big surprise.”
When asked about how this match felt versus their first meeting, Joe would stress both men were much more experienced now.
“When we first locked up, we were very new in the industry and still very much a journeyman learning. You never stop learning, but at the same time, we definitely knew a hell of a lot less back then.”
Punk Is Already Moving Onto Another Feud
Punk would finally get a win over Joe during their match in the semi-finals of the Owen Hart Memorial Tournament, something which was a shock to many.
However, Punk would not go on to win the tournament, being defeated in the finals by Ricky Starks – who cheated to win. It’s expected that Punk will look for a rematch with Starks in the future after that result, making his match with Joe a one off moment for fans, and not the start of a new feud.
