It appears that fans are cooled on another CM Punk versus Samoa Joe showdown at the moment after the last showdown received a mixed response.
Some liked it, others felt that the two had aged too much to put on their 2000s-era best performance. Also, the two weren’t in a system together and conditioned to work with and around each other in future matches.
Fans Aren’t Here for Samoa Joe Potentially Facing CM Punk at AEW All In
At the moment we’re a little over two weeks away from AEW All In where CM Punk hasn’t been given a match. However, he does have an ongoing story involving Samoa Joe and their beef from Ring of Honor.
Punk’s current story surrounds being recognized as the Real World champion, an angle that could give Collision its own World title.
You can trust AEW to come up with a name for the title as the AEW Real World championship just makes the present title seem like an imposter.
The concern among fans isn’t about the belt itself but the match at All In at Wembley. Fans were mixed for CM Punk versus Samoa Joe during the Owen Hart memorial tournament and that concern grew when the two continued to have interactions after the tournament.
After all, Punk managed to defeat Joe in the tournament. Given the significance of the match in these two wrestlers’ rivalry, fans simply felt it wasn’t up to snuff—never mind both are decades older and have picked up injuries in that time. The point is: following that match, it appears that fans have had enough of that for now.
Also, there are other stars on the roster who could garner big, marquee promotion along with the World title match between champion MJF and challenger Adam Cole.
The main name being bandied around as it could magically happen without incident and/or greater loss of funds is Kenny Omega. Things were never actually resolved between them as far as the backstage dispute. They’re primarily on separate shows because of it.
While Omega is extremely popular at the moment, this would be match he might have to lose so that the title is solidified on Collision—unless the AEW World Champion makes his home on the Saturday show.
Punk versus Omega would be a massive second main event for the show but there’s only two weeks to really make it make sense for All In. The time to start would’ve been the 8/12 episode of Collision.
That’s the other thing, time has been put into Samoa Joe and CM Punk’s interactions so you kind of have to run Punk vs. Joe at the event.
Something drastic would have to occur and Punk would have to do both prime time shows to really squeeze what little he can out of a showdown with Omega.
While wrestling is an industry where you never say “never”, Punk vs. Omega doesn’t seem remotely close to happening.
What do you think? Could AEW pull off a quick change up and find Punk a new opponent again? Or do you see CM Punk facing Samoa Joe at Wembley. Is that match you’d want to see again?
