The first contract negotiations surrounding pre-AEW World Champion MJF made headlines because of legit interest in his contract status, interest from WWE, and his ability to sell all of this as a very real threat to AEW’s roster make up and booking.
MJF, one of the most coveted stars in the pro wrestling industry right now, has revealed whaen his current AEW contract will expire and how much he’s expecting in his new contract. We’re looking at January 2024 when he’ll be up for a new contract.
Will Tony Khan Have the Brinks Trucks Ready to Pay AEW World Champion MJF Come January 2024
Regardless of your take on how MJF has been as AEW World Champion, he is definitely an important part of AEW programming as one of these ring-ready and mic-ready heels. Every promotion needs at least a couple of microphone beasts if they have television deals. That’s really how a company catches casual viewers for their product and more viewers equals a happy network.
Except in the case of ECW and TNN but that’s been discussed. So MJF’ s deal contract is finito in January 2024 and his absence would be an issue for the company—especially since there is some interest from WWE in the youngster. So, would Tony Khan be up to drop “seven figures” to keep MJF?
This comes from a recent edition of Hot Ones featuring the World Champion and Adam Cole. When asked about re-signing with the company, MJF said:
“January 1, 2024, they better back up the goddamn Brinks truck, okay pal? Realistically, I know that there’s a lot of money that’s going to be thrown my way from both sides, I’nm not accepting anything under 7 figures. I won’t even—I won’t even make eye contact with a contract that’s under 7 figures.” (h/t: WrestlingInc)
As we know, MJF makes over $1 million via his present contract but we can expect that number to go up as did the champion’s stock over the past few years. The thing here is if Khan can lock MJF down before January 1, 2024 or if this will be a case of AEW randomness stepping in. When that happens, things have a tendency to be end up off there rails in the company.
What do you think will go down in contract negotiations? Will Tony Khan lock MJF down and will there be another storyline around it? Or will the company have to put the belt on someone else and let MJF go? Share your predictions in the comments!
