As we all know: CM Punk and AEW are donezo. Jack Perry’s still on suspension and WWE has interest in Punk. Mind you, it’s most likely the higher-ups who see the financial advantage of having him involved with the company.
Of course, creatively, CM Punk would be fresh air after being gone so long. WWE could build a new corporate heel, they’ve got an older anti-authority face—they could run their decadal McMahon Family Must Fall storyline.
So Where Does CM Punk Go from Here?
Hell, Punk could be booked as a bitter veteran here to spank the youngsters. He could even be instilling his approach and views into a young future main eventer. You could say he’d be WWE’s Sting. Maybe he’ll learn a few new tricks from his charge.
Those are just possibilities for WWE and CM Punk. Outside of Stamford, there are promotions and stars who are interested in working with Punk. Impact Wrestling has expressed interest and have said to be excited by the opportunity. While it would definitely be interesting, there’s no reported interest from the Real World Champion.
I have to say, that’s a bit disappointing as an aged, veteran CM Punk returning to Impact Wrestling—far from his NWA TNA days—a seasoned, grumpier former World Champion would be interesting. Impact has been on a ball with its booking over the past few years as well. Just to see how he would fit into another fresh locker room filled with younger stars and how he would be booked are both extremely interesting.
It would be a matter of being able to meet CM Punk’s financial demands. Current NWA World’s Heavyweight Champion E3 also expressed interest in having the Real World Champion in NWA. In speaking with Dr. Chris Featherstone and Bill Apter on Sportskeeda Wrestle Binge, he noted that their locker room was more professional and that the “shenanigans” that resulted in Punk’s AEW departure wouldn’t be an issue.
EC3 also said that Punk would be a “game changer” for NWA in his idea of NWA 2.0. It would be tremendous for the Atlanta-based promotion but that would be a heavy contract to meet. Especially if you consider how NWA typically picks up former stars from a certain level of WWE.
