The time of CM Punk in All Elite Wrestling came to a sudden end late in August of 2023. He would be fired from the company after a backstage fight at the biggest show in the history of the company, AEW All In 2023.
Having got physically involved with Jack Perry and even reportedly lunging at Tony Khan – Punk would be removed from the company after a brief legal investigation.
This came nearly a year to the day since Punk’s backstage fight with Kenny Omega & The Young Bucks – which nearly became a match on AEW programming.
Young Bucks Were Willing To Work With CM Punk If He Stayed Out Of Trouble
Dave Meltzer of the Wrestling Observer would publish the following information in an edition of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter.
“One person very close to the situation said that the Bucks had said if six months went by without any issues, they would have been willing to sit down and work with him.”
It was clear from the start that there was big money in match between The Elite and CM Punk. Add in that FTR were ready to step up and make this trios match happen – and had Punk not squandered his time in AEW by constantly picking fights, he could have turned a black mark on his character into a pile of cash and another classic match.
Punk Threw Everything Away For Backstage Fights
This was obviously not the case – and given Punk’s history in AEW, something likely would have changed these plans at the last minute. From his return to AEW for the debut episode of AEW Collision to his firing after AEW All In – Punk had backstage issues with Christopher Daniels, Ryan Nemeth and Jack Perry.
The story of Punk in AEW is one of squandered potential. There were moments of greatness throughout, with his return to professional wrestling and excellent feud with MJF going down as some of the best moments and matches in the company’s history. However, he will mostly be remembered now for his backstage fights and issues – instead of his work on camera.
