When Sasha Banks would leave WWE, it was a moment that fans took notice of. Alongside Naomi, Banks would strike out to prove she didn’t need WWE to succeed in professional wrestling.
Naomi would find a place in Impact Wrestling as Trinity, becoming the Knockouts Champion. Meanwhile, Banks would head to Japan to remake herself as Mercedes Mone – joining New Japan Pro Wrestling becoming the IWGP Women’s World Champion, and quickly showing her ability to draw in fans.
Mercedes Mone Is The Beyonce Of Professional Wrestling
Appearing as a guest on the Women’s Wrestling Talk podcast – former IWGP Junior Heavyweight Tag Team Champion Kevin Knight would talk about Mercedes Mone. He’d compare her to music powerhouse Beyonce. Knight had the following to say.
“With Mercedes Moné, no, I never got to have a full conversation with her yet. I’ve only met her twice and it was just saying ‘hey’ in passing and all that. I don’t like to bother people backstage so, if they got something going on, I just let them do their thing and then I’m focusing on my match anyway so, yeah, I’m excited to see the things that she’ll bring to the independent world, to the New Japan-STARDOM world because she’s legitimately like the Beyoncé of wrestling and wherever she goes, her fans is following so it’s just gonna sell out everywhere. So, it’s only good business in my opinion. So I’m excited to see how she does things on her own.”
The ability for Mone to move tickets was proven with her in-ring debut for NJPW, when her being announced for Battle In The Valley 2023 would see the event instantly sell out. Mone is currently out of the ring with a leg injury suffered against AEW’s Willow Nightingale.
She was spotted at AEW All In London 2023 – watching from the stands as AEW had their biggest show to date. Tony Khan hopes to bring Mone into an AEW ring once she’s cleared to wrestle once again.
