Since 2019, there’s been two major professional wrestling promotions in North America. WWE remained on top since buying both ECW & WCW in the early 2000’s – with the likes of Impact Wrestling & Ring of Honor never able to touch the level of WWE.
That changed with All Elite Wrestling, a fresh company with a solid financial backing, and some incredible wrestlers. Now in 2023, AEW has run shows in major venues like Wembley Stadium, and has tempted many legends of WWE – and could be on the path to their biggest signing to date – Edge.
There Is Nothing Left For Edge To Accomplish Within WWE
When it comes to the WWE career of Edge, it’s quicker to list what he didn’t accomplish. Having won just about every possible championship, and other accolades like the Royal Rumble, King of the Ring and Money in the Bank – it is no shock that he is also part of the WWE Hall of Fame.
Initially retired in the early 2010’s due to a neck injury – he’d return, and go on a run ending in his hometown of Toronto, Ontario, Canada against Sheamus.
That was promoted as his final match for WWE, fulfilling the amount of matches set in the contract he signed upon his return to the ring.
Following this, Edge would be removed with WWE’s internal roster – putting his future in the company in doubt. There is simply nothing left for Edge to do in WWE, and while he might not have many matches left in his body – he’s the type to seek out new challenges.
Christian Cage Could Be The Key To Edge’s Future
The only company who would be able to match the offers of WWE on a new contract would be Tony Khan and AEW. Edge would find some familiar faces within AEW, with Chris Jericho, Matt & Jeff Hardy, Paul Wight, Tazz, and longtime friend Christian Cage signed to AEW. Edge started his career alongside Christian, and had some of his most defining matches against him.
Christian would recently sign a new deal with AEW, confirming this during the AEW All Out 2023 media scrum. This means that if Edge wants to have one final match with Cage, it will need to take place in AEW.
Even if Edge signs a deal for five matches with AEW, it would allow him to wrestle some fresh faces like Kenny Omega or Hangman Page in huge PPV matches – before bringing his career full circle.
