Tama Tonga Speaks On How NJPW Has Handled COVID-19

While they have not been running shows since the COVID-19 pandemic has begun, no company has been handling this situation better than NJPW. They are now considering empty arena shows, but they have just cancelled their Best Of The Super Juniors tournament. However, despite not running shows, they have made sure their roster is being well taken care of. Speaking on this is a member of Bullet Club, former IWGP Tag Team Champion, Tama Tonga.

Tama Tonga Speaks On How NJPW Has Taken Care Of Their Roster

Speaking with Wrestling Inc. for their daily podcast, Tama Tonga would go into how it has been to be part of NJPW during the COVID-19 pandemic.

“They are letting us stay home and be with our families and not coming into work, No. 1. No. 2, they are taking care of us by paying us to be at home during this hard time when the company’s not making any money. That’s really big. They’re not firing any of us right now so I’m very grateful. I think we’re just taking it month-by-month and week-by-week and adjusting. I think they’ve just put out that they’ve cancelled the Super Juniors until June. So, we’re gonna go until June and see how the situation is. We’re just taking it day-by-day and step-by-step.”

This is in direct comparison to WWE, who has let go a bulk of their talent a few weeks ago. NJPW might benefit from this, as Karl Anderson & Luke Gallows were among that group, some of the best tag team wrestlers in NJPW history. They are companies of similar size, but NJPW is handling things much better.

How Will NJPW Deal With Best Of The Super Juniors?

With one of their major tournaments now cut from their annual calendar, people are trying to figure out what they are going to do. If the situation improves in the fall, we could see them run this tournament alongside the G1 Climax. Instead of doing tag matches, they could just do five matches from each tournament per night, with them alternating main events. This would create some of the most stacked cards in NJPW history, and we could even see the Junior Heavyweights outshine the Heavyweights along the way.

Do you think NJPW has handled the COVID-19 situation well? How should they handle Best of The Super Juniors going forward? Let us know what you think in the comment section down below.
