As much grief as we give Vince McMahon for his business practices and decision making, it was great to see so much of his sense of humor brought out in Money in the Bank pay-per-view.
From all reports, his humor is on the silly, slapstick side and it was on full display at MITB. Aside from the moments like AJ Styles being pinned under weights and the food fight, we also got to see the man himself in brief action as AJ Styles and Daniel Bryan’s fight entered his office.
Mocks the mocking of his habits
After their fight was halted and Styles and Bryan left, Vince made sure to get a good handful of hand sanitizer before getting back to work. The fun part about this wasn’t just him sanitizing his hands, but the fact he didn’t touch anything Styles of Bryan did. In fact, he was never close to them.
But he did it anyway before returning to his work (probably fine tuning the writing for Raw or Smackdown), which played on the fact he’s been played up as a germophobe by various accounts. While the fact he hates anyone coughing or sneezing around him has been verified by several sources, as well as he doesn’t believe in being sick, it was a well-staged gimmick.
Sure, it may not have been that at all, but given how he’s so intent on managing everything in the day-to-day operation of the WWE, is it really so out there to expect it was a gag inside a gag? And a well placed and played one at that?
There are limits to his humor though.
Don’t mess with the bones
According to reports, originally the creative team had written for Styles and Bryan’s fight to include Vince’s office and furnishings within, but he put a kybosh of that idea because he reportedly didn’t want to risk anything happening to his dinosaur bones.
Honestly, who can blame him?
When I saw what looks like a T-Rex skull on his wall, I wanted to go there just to study it. In fact, the entire headquarters is beautiful and looks like an awesome place to work, Vince’s moods notwithstanding.
But even with that part of the event off limits, the main event was probably the best, if not one of the best, main events in the last year for the WWE. It had a little of everything from comedic to tense, serious moments.
It was a great glimpse into Vince McMahon’s sense of humor in a way that brought back memories of his and Austin’s feud (hospital fight is still the best) and other moments throughout the years. Maybe they should include more of these with the right superstars? We can’t have seriousness all the time, right?
