While he is now gone from the company, few have had a more interesting career in a short span than Lio Rush. A highly touted signing due to his incredible performances on the indies, he would catch flack early on for an ill timed joke on Twitter when Emma was released from WWE. Despite getting negative attention from the likes of Bray Wyatt, he would resurface months later as the hype man of Bobby Lashley. During this partnership, Lashley would win two Intercontinental Championships, but was Rush planned to win one of his own on the biggest stage of all?
Lio Rush Claims He Was Meant To Win The Intercontinental Championship At Wrestlemania 35
During the feud between Lashley & Finn Balor, Lashley would lose the Intercontinental Championship due to Lio Rush taking the fall in a handicap match at that years Elimination Chamber. This would intensify the feud, and lead to a clash between Lashley & Balor at Wrestlemania. We got a simple singles match, where Balor brought out The Demon, but according to Rush it could have went much differently.
Speaking with Fightful, Rush would say the following. “People are gonna like this, but at the same time, they’re not, because I remember a lot of people were saying it. At the time, they were going to have me win the Intercontinental Championship while I was with Bobby and the whole and the whole storyline with Finn Balor. They were gonna have me win the title. But I forgot what happened. I forgot what happened and why that wasn’t the case. I think the idea came from Elimination Chamber, where it was me and Bobby versus Finn in like a handicap match and I think they were going to do it again at WrestleMania but I was gonna be the one to win the title and it was just gonna throw everybody off. But yeah, for whatever reason, that got scratched.”
Can We Believe This Story?
Having someone as young and untested as Rush winning such a prestigious title at Wrestlemania would have been a shock, but it would have been more memorable than what we ended up with. We have no way of knowing if this story is actually true, but considering how much turmoil the WWE career of Lio Rush had, they very well could have offered him this to try and keep him on their roster.
