The recent Dark Side Of The Ring special on Owen Hart has brought him back to the public attention, and it has people remembering their matches they had with Hart. One of these people is Edge, who recently returned to WWE at the 2020 Royal Rumble before entering a feud with Randy Orton, which is bringing us what WWE is dubbing ‘The Greatest Wrestling Match Ever’ at Backlash.
Edge Remembers Wrestling Owen Hart Early In His Career
In his first PPV singles match in his WWE career, Edge was set to face Owen Hart at WWF In Your House 24: Breakdown in the opening match of the night. While speaking with Inside The Ropes, he would reminise about this match.
“He had a little bit of a sore groin that night, he was all taped up, and I had all these ideas because I’d dreamt of wrestling Owen Hart. He was one of the people when I would be driving or I’d be daydreaming or I’d be sitting in class and I’d be thinking ‘right Owen and I could do this, we could do that, or what if we did this or what if we did that’ So now I have the opportunity, so I pitch all these ideas… and he was like ‘cool let’s do it’ and we came back after the match and he said ‘man that was fun, I actually got to wrestle.’ That was a huge compliment. I’ll never forget that.”
Owen Hart would win this match over the brooding rookie in about 9 minutes using a roll up, though an early counter of the Sharpshooter nearly got Edge the win intially. This match would also be the debut of Christian, who appeared at the finish to distract his storyline brother.
Going On To Become A Legend In His Own Right
Getting a compliment like this from one of the best to lace up a pair of boots is huge for someone young into their career. Edge would go on to become a nine time world champion, even initally retiring during his seventh reign as World Heavyweight Champion, and having a competive match with someone like Owen Hart early in his career was a sign that WWE had big plans for Edge.
