AEW Dynamite continues. During the commercial break, Hangman Page and Kenny Omega are hanging out at the hotel though sadly I couldn’t hear a word of it, but I can only imagine some kind of BTE-level conversation was going on. Back in the arena and back from break, Tony Schiavone welcomes Cody to the ring and congratulates him. Cody asks if he knows why Tom Brady is his favorite quarterback. He says it’s not just because he’s from the Boston area, it’s because he was not the first-round draft pick. But after running up the score he’s made his mark and the parallel in his head, was that Tony Khan wanted to create a merit-based company. And yet he was not the first called, not the second or third. He was the fourth judging by his finger. But he says that’s all absolved by his TNT Championship victory.
Says his story is not one of nepotism. He was the kid who was brought up to TV way too early when he didn’t even know how to run the ropes, but he grew up before our eyes. Says he’s got a mean Cuban mom with a broken ankle, probably standing on it right now. Says you can have all the talent in the world, but you can shove it up your ass because he will outwork you. Cody says that he is about to cut a schedule like none other. Says that every week he’s going to be defending the TNT Championship, this is considered an Open Challenge. Cody says we’re still in the Pandemic Era of wrestling, broadway is gone dark. We’re without our greatest assets, the fans. But they’re still supporting them, they bought the PPV this past Saturday en masse and blew away all projections. To them, he feels an obligation to deliver.
So wow, sounds like we’re going full US Open with the TNT Championship right off the bat. That seems like a pretty good way to establish a strong prestige from the get-go, provided Cody can keep up the match quality it demands. And I have no doubt that he can. AEW has more than enough promising up-and-comers to make this work out beautifully. And it’s a good way to establish the title as something being defended very frequently on Dynamite as well, honestly I’d love it if it was a pure TV title, defended on Dynamite exclusively.
