AEW Dark commences, it’s not super-sized this time but I imagine slightly longer matches for what remains this week. First up, John Skyler in a singles match this time, interestingly against Billy Gunn!
John Skyler vs. Billy Gunn
As the match begins, Billy’s son Austin is pounding the apron and chanting for his dad. Billy wants a lock-up, Skyler backs up into the corner to force some separation. Starting to lock-up, Billy surprises him with a leg kick! Austin cackles at a high pitch because of this. Billy with a hammerlock, and then he just up and spanks him. Austin continues laughing shrilly, Skyler doesn’t take kindly to this and steps outside to stare him down. Billy gets between them, Skyler rushes into the ring. Billy and Austin share a moment, Billy comes into the ring and it looks like Skyler’s gonna take advantage with a headlock but Billy quickly shoots him off and shoulder blocks him! Skyler tries a leap frog but Billy stops short and yells at him to go higher.
Whips him, Skyler gets sent to the apron but he rushes in with a Pullover Spear for a 1 count! Smacks him in the face and demands that he stay down. Right hand to the face, hits the ropes but Billy counters with a move similar to the Deep Six! Billy looking for a powerbomb but Austin talks him out of it, wants the Fameasser. Billy tries it but Skyler avoids this, hits a superkick but doesn’t quite take him down! Tries for a second one but it’s blocked, Billy spins him around and hits the Fameasser for the victory.
Winner: Billy Gunn
He’s introduced as just “Billy”, it seems like they’re maybe getting around a copyright by introducing them as Billy & Austin Gunn, who together form the Gunn Club. Honestly never noticed until tonight. But for the sake of clarity I think continuing to refer to him by the full name in these recaps makes sense. Anyway, definitely impressive that Billy’s still such an athlete at this age. Not everything looked as clean as it used to but he can still pull off everything he’s known for just fine.
Brandi and Dustin Rhodes are being interviewed in a parking lot, QT Marshall nowhere to be found but they’re happy for their recent successes nonetheless. We hear a car horn honking as QT pulls up in a slick blue Corvette with Allie in the passenger’s seat. Brandi and Dustin aren’t too pleased with this but QT’s playing it off. Brandi suggests QT’s receding hairline is causing a midlife crisis but he just says “New hair, new me, new car”. They want him to come with them for work but QT says they’re gonna go get something to eat. Dustin asks him to get him something as he’s starving so QT tosses him an apple. Brandi keeps him from eating it.
