New Japan Pro Wrestling’s (NJPW) Lion’s Break Collision continued with its biggest episode to date, after following up a well-received third episode that featured Tom Lawlor make his NJPW against NJPW veterans Rocky Romero.
The fourth episode, which ran just under an hour showed the template NJPW could use for an eventual weekly episodic program in North America while staying true to the in-ring centric approach the promotion is known for.
The marquee match saw recent NJPW Los Angeles (LA) Dojo graduate Karl Fredericks take on Jeff Cobb after their rivalry began back on the first Lion’s Break episode.
This was the first singles match for “The Alpha Wolf” Karl Fredericks after graduating from the NJPW LA Dojo, and he did not back down from the far more experienced Cobb.
Cobb who didn’t wrestle his typical suplex heavy style and helped highlight the ongoing grudge between him and Fredericks with a brawling style.
Fredericks was able to take advantage of Cobb going away from his strength which allowed him to get the advantage on the former NEVER Openweight Championship during portions of the match.
However, Cobb was able to rely on his amateur and professional wrestling experience to eventually grab the advantage over his new rival. After a violent forearm, Cobb would put Fredericks away with the Tour of the Islands at the 11 minute 48-second mark.
Throughout the match, Cobb avoided the MD (Manifest Destiny) that Karl debuted on Lion’s Break Collision Episode 3 before pinned The DKC.
With the announcement of the new NJPW Strong weekly episodic show beginning on August 7, Cobb and Fredericks will likely feature heavily on the show.
With questions concerning current United States Heavyweight Champion Jon Moxley’s reign as champion due to North American exclusivity with All Elite Wrestling (AEW), Cobb could set his sites on obtaining the title.
