This isn’t a surprise as Triple Threats and Fatal Four Ways seem to be the norm in the WWE as of late, and WWE Smackdown has a pair of rivalries and big pushes in line in this one.
While we wouldn’t be surprised to see all four men come out to challenge WWE Universal Champion Roman Reigns during his address to the fans, that feels unlikely.
Mainly because it wouldn’t make sense to do that when both have been promoted by the WWE.
It’d be a waste of time and energy, but that doesn’t mean it couldn’t happen as someone in the marketing section could’ve made a whoopsie as they have in the last with posters and such.
However it’s done, this looks like a really good matchup that’ll capitalize on a pair of rivalries, and a third budding one.
Clash of Champions opportunity
The winner of this match will get to face Reigns at Clash of Champions, and further their other feud over the next few weeks as they may lose their chance in a match under the right circumstances.
To us, it looks like Big E and Matt Riddle are the favorites simply because they’ve been getting a good push over recent weeks.
Riddle and King Corbin has been entertaining, and while Riddle seemed to end their feud at Payback, it doesn’t mean it’s over.
And Big E and Sheamus have had a couple of really good matches when they haven’t been interrupted by Retribution.
Having Riddle or Big E win the championship opportunity only to later lose it prior to the Clash of Champions pay-per-view would be a classic way to build sympathy for either of them.
But it’s also been done a million and one times.
Does this mean it won’t happen? Nope, we just think it won’t have the surprise factor they’re looking for.
Sheamus, the dark horse
We’re going to take a shot at left field here and say we think Sheamus will win, and there’s a couple of reasons.
One, he deserves it as the others are more suited to chasing the Intercontinental Championship at this time, and in our opinion.
Another reason is Corbin cause Sheamus two matches, and it’s doubtful Sheamus has forgotten or forgiven that.
At least, it’d make sense for his character to want to go after Corbin and pinning him to win makes sense and more than evens the score.
The third reason is that Sheamus will become an anti-hero in the Steve Austin vein (he already is, in our opinion) and he’s the leader of Retribution.
Retribution could help him win tonight as we imagine it will be no disqualification, but that depends on what the WWE considers are the rules for tonight’s WWE Smackdown.
If it’s no DQ, then we expect Retribution to interfere. If it’s not, then it’ll be a controversial but clear victory by Sheamus.
This or at Clash of Champions is when we could learn he’s the leader of Retribution.
Even if he’s not their leader, him winning this and turning face/anti-hero against Corbin just makes sense.
What do you think? Who will win and challenge Roman Reigns at Clash of Champions?
