Last week, in what many called the biggest main event in NXT history, there was not one but two men left standing, After an hour long iron man match from Adam Cole, Johnny Gargano, Tommaso Ciampa, and Finn Balor, Gargano & Ciampa had one fall each, but Cole & Balor ended with two falls each. There was no time left, so this week action starts back up in sudden death.
One of these men will become NXT Champion for the second time, adding to their record setting reigns with the title. It can truly go either way, with them being two of the strongest champions in NXT history, but fans are on the side of Balor given Cole just got done reigning for over a year. Who would be the one holding gold high after this match?
Opening Chain Wrestling As Expected
Even after going an hour last week, they were ready to go. Balor & Cole would lock up right away, with Cole being taken to the mat, losing the opening chain wrestling exchange. He’d be locked in a headlock, and when he shoved Balor off? A shoulder tackle would bring him back to square one.
Cole would finally gain some control grabbing a hammerlock, and moved this into a pinfall for a two count. This would start Cole targeting the previously injured shoulder, which famously cut Balor’s Universal Championship reign very short.
They’d trade control on the mat, showing that while this might devolve into a spotfest in the end? These are two of the best wrestlers in NXT. A basement dropkick from Cole would be the first strike, and the tone would be changed.
Let’s Pick The Pace Up
Balor would be sent off the ropes and taken onto the shoulders of Cole, who would hit a Ushiguroshi for a two count, as we went into a commercial break. Through picture & picture, we could see Cole attacking the neck and back, softening Balor up for the Last Shot. Balor would fight back hitting a hard back elbow and grab another headlock, before hitting some chops.
Coming back, Balor hits a snapmare and a kick to the back, getting a two count. The pace has remained slow to this point, but things picked up again as Balor scoop slammed Cole and hit a running elbow drop. Cole would be beat down with stomps and chops in the corner, before falling to the mat and eating a basement dropkick.
The feeling out process is over once again, and Cole was looking worse for wear already. He’d be sent from corner to corner, his chest ravaged by running chops. The last one woke up Cole, who’d make a comeback with a pump kick to the face.
Adam Cole Fights To Stay Alive
Balor would get back to his feet and attempt a German Suplex, with Cole landing on his feet and nailing the Backstabber for a near fall. Cole looked for the Shining Wizard, Balor dodged and tried for the double stomp and missed. A superkick would be thrown, Balor countered with a slingblade, before trying the John Woo dropkick only to eat the Shining Wizard.
Balor would be in position for the Last Shot, but countered into the standing double stomp and would just stomp Cole out. Cole went outside, and ended up sitting to catch his breath, and Balor set up a running dropkick. He’d instead run into a superkick, but a double down would follow, both men running on fumes.
Back in the ring, they’d be on their knees throwing desperate strikes as they get to their feet. Cole hit a pump kick, Balor comes back with the Pele Kick, tries for 1916 and instead takes a brainbuster onto Coles knee. The Panama Sunrise was set up, but Balor kicked him off and tried for Coup De Grace, missing. Cole would apply the Figure Four Leg Lock and try for submission.
Finn Balor Won’t Be Denied
Balor got the bottom rope to break the hold, but the damage might have been done. Cole was in control, but a slingblade out of nowhere gave Balor a burst of energy. He’d hit the John Woo dropkick, and have another chance for Coup De Grace. It would hit perfectly, but due to the hurt knee, he didn’t get the pin right away, and Cole becomes the first man in NXT history to kick out of this move.
Cole would get the Figure Four Leg Lock once again, this time having Balor in the middle of the ring, but he’d roll closer to the ropes. Balor would get back to his feet, and take a superkick, then the Last Shot. This ends most matches for Cole, but it wasn’t enough to end Balor tonight.
Cole went to the second rope for Panama Sunrise, but was caught by Balor, who’d hit a reverse 1916. His knee was barely functional now, making the climb to the top near impossible. Cole joined him, but came down hard with a top rope 1916. Finn Balor is the new NXT Champion!
This was an incredible match, much better than Cole & Balors previous match. Are you happy with Finn Balor as the new NXT Champion? Let us know what you think in the comment section down below.
