There was a huge upset in the world of boxing this past weekend, as American fighter Teofimo Lopez defeated Vasyl Lomachenko. Lomachenko is widely considered as one of the best pound for pound boxers in the world, and was the heavy favourite going into the title fight against the 23-year-old challenger.
Lomachenko cut an increasingly frustrated figure at the end of the fight, as he didn’t even contest the unanimous points decision that went against him. The result means that Lopez is now the WBA, WBO and WBC title holder, as well as the IBF title that he was already holding.
Boxing News: Lopez Dominates Early Rounds
It was a stunning display by the challenger, who many had written off before the action had got underway. Lopez was dominant in the early rounds and kept the Ukrainian fighter at arms length before taking his chances when they arrived. Lomachenko has a heart of a champion, and that was on full display in the final couple of rounds, as he tried his best to land some shots as he knew that the decision would go against him.
However, he looked a beaten fighter at that point, as the preparation that Lopez did seemed to put him in good stead for the huge fight. The American claimed after the win that he is no ready to take over the ‘world’. There is also a place in the history books for Lopez, who is now the youngest to hold four titles as an undisputed champion.
Boxing News: Possible Rematch?
The win for Lopez means that he extended his record to 16 consecutive victories. Lomachenko has now lost for the second time in 15 professional fights. The Ukrainian revealed afterwards that he thought that he had done enough to win the fight, but his body language certainly pointed to the opposite.
The performance was deemed one of the very best of the year, with many even arguing that the level of performance was deserving of a crowd in attendance. There is no doubting that it will be among the performances of the year in boxing, and it is rightly considered to be on par with Tyson Fury’s performance against Deontay Wilder. However, there will now be a desire to see the two fighters go at it once again, and see if Lopez can do the unthinkable and successfully defend his titles against Lomachenko.
