A-Kid made history in NXT UK with his recent victory over Trent Seven, becoming the first winner of the Heritage Cup. Riding high from this, he got on the debut episode of the highest rated talk show in NXT UK history, Supernova Sessions. When Dar claimed to be the mentor of A-Kid, he’d be corrected. Tyler Bate was his mentor.
Mentioning his name brought Bate out from the shadows, and somehow Dar was able to book this fantastic main event match. It’s Tyler Bate & A-Kid for the Heritage Cup, which is a championship to be defended I guess! British Round Rules apply here, we have six three minute rounds and it’s best two out of three falls.
A-Kid is a proven master of these matches, while Tyler Bate has never wrestled under this ruleset until now. Bate is the first ever NXT UK Champion, former NXT Tag Team Champion, and all around a prodigy, so he might adapt very fast.
The Feeling Out Process Begins
They’d lock up and Bate showed his power advantage, but A-Kid is more of a technician, a power advantage was expected. A-Kid escaped the grasp of Bate and grabbed a headlock. Bate powered up to his feet, was taken back down but tilted Kid into a pinfall. Kid held on, but Bate showed some of his grappling skill, got the top wrist lock and took Kid down.
Bate was caught with a headscissor takedown, got back to his feet and avoided another submission. The cravate would be applied, but Kid had a counter for this and got control of the wrist. They’d try to end the round in-control, but had a complete stalemate. First round showed them as equally matched in technical skills at this point, but the feeling out process is through.
Second round picked right back up, and a test of strength was started before Kid just twisted into a straight jacket. Bate couldn’t break out on the first go, but shimmied down, got free and turned this hold around. Kid was able to reverse right back into the hold after Bate took the hold too far on the mat.
Bate finally broke this hold by hurling Kid across the ring. Kid went for some MMA tactics and drew Bate into more mat grappling. Bate held his own, got Kid back up before Bate got an ankle pick. The second round would end with another stalemate, but action was picking up.
Tyler Bate Picks The Pace Up
Round three started off slow once again, more grappling, with Bate getting a tight wrist lock and maintained before showing some Dunne influence with some bending of the hand. Kid broke this and shoved Bate to the corner, before hitting a shoulder tackle. Things finally got physical, and pace picked up. Bate grabbed the airplane spin but Kid countered and hit a German Suplex.
Kid went for the Northern Lights Suplex, Bate landed on his feet, Kid went for another German Suplex and got rolled up deep for the first fall of the match. Bate 1, A-Kid 0. The round would end, and Bate looked like the cat who caught the canary.
Kid knows what this means, and came into round 4 having to control his emotions and remain calm. Bate pressed the advantage and tried to get Kid frustrated before kicks were thrown. A head kick didn’t get the KO, before Bate came back with hard strikes of his own. Bate went low after a break on the ropes, but Kid got the grovet.
He’d nail a suplex and go for a sleeper hold, Bate fighting up and breaking the hold with the corner. Kid leaped back onto the back of Bate and wanted to put Bate to sleep. Bate broke the hold, ended up in a triangle choke, but powered Kid up into a powerbomb to end the round without tapping out.
A-Kid Proves There Was No Fluke In His Win
Round five begins, and A-Kid is desperate at this point. Very little time to make this a win, and he’s been outworked at every turn here. Bate got control once again, and Kid had to fight him down.
Kid tried some technical wrestling, but it was the flipping DDT off the ropes that got Bate down. Three seconds later, and this one has been tied up. Bate 1, A-Kid 1. Next fall takes it!
Bate was rocked after that DDT, using this break to recover. Kid was ready to go right away with well placed kicks as a standoff began. Bate hit some palm strikes and the Liger kick, but Kid almost fell to the outside. Pulled back in, Bate went for the suplex, and Kid countered into a sleeper before going for the O’Connor Roll. Bate kicked out, and was quickly kicked right in the head.
Kid got the distance and went for the dropkick but Bate dodged and went for the rebound lariat. This would be countered into an armbar, Bate sprawling out before being trapped with a quick pinfall, getting Kid the big win!
