Lately on both AEW Dark & Dynamite, fans have been seeing more and more of Brian Pillman Jr. His tag team with Griff Garrison, the Varsity Blondes, is showing more and more potential with each passing match, and it’s clear he’s got a bright future ahead of himself in AEW.

This sadly means he doesn’t have the time to focus on both AEW & Ohio Valley Wrestling, where he recently became the OVW Heavyweight Champion. His reign with the belt previously held by men like John Cena, Batista, Matt Morgan, CM Punk, and Cliff Compton wouldn’t even last a month, and had no defenses.

Brian Pillman Jr. Couldn’t Handle The Tight Schedule Of AEW & OVW

Given how cumbersome travel has become thanks to a global pandemic, Pillman Jr. was forced to make a choice. Between AEW & OVW, one of them is a clear bigger choice, with AEW being on national TV while OVW is mainly watched from YouTube. However, he doesn’t regret a second of time he spent in OVW, saying the following on Twitter.

“From taking my first bump in an OVW ring to then winning the Heavyweight Championship inside a steel cage 4 years later, words cannot describe how important this title was to me! Amidst a pandemic I chased every available opportunity which resulted in running a tight schedule. In order to fully commit my talents to AEW and limit my exposure to infection, I have cut down on outside bookings. I wish nothing but the best for OVW as they crown a new champion on Jan 9th at the Nightmare Rumble! I urge you all to support this talented locker room and crew!”

What Will Become Of The OVW Heavyweight Championship?

Understanding the situation, OVW made quick moves with the championship. On January 9th, they will hold the Nightmare Rumble, and the winner of this Battle Royale will be named the new OVW Heavyweight Champion.

There is no bad blood between Pillman & OVW, with owner Al Snow including the following in the press release. “We’ve been really proud to have Brian as our OVW Heavyweight Champion, even if it wasn’t as lengthy of a reign as expected. His talent really made everyone on the roster elevate their game, and for that I am very grateful. I really think Brian is going to continue to shine in AEW, and make all of us, and more importantly, his father proud.”

While Pillman Jr. isn’t quite ready to be a major singles player in AEW yet, he’s one of their most promising prospects, and keeps getting better. Will he claim tag team gold in 2021 with Griff Garrison? Let us know what you think in the comment section down below.
