Since 2016, NXT has constantly honored Dusty Rhodes with an annual tag team tournament. We knew to expect it again in 2021, but this year it’s being done twice. The men’s tournament is already announced, and a lot of the teams have been declared, but this year, the WWE Women’s Tag Team division gets their chance to shine. It’s time to get ready for the first ever Women’s Dusty Rhodes Tag Team Classic!
Potential Teams For First Womens Dusty Rhodes Tag Team Classic
While this initially feels a bit off, there are enough established female tag teams around to pull this off. Raquel Gonzalez & Dakota Kai, Kacy Catanzaro & Kayden Carter, Xia Li & Shao Khan Lady who doesn’t have an actual name yet, Candice LeRae & Indi Hartwell, Shotzi Blackheart & Ember Moon, just to name a few. This isn’t even counting teams like Riott Squad or even The Iconics potentially coming back down to NXT for a few matches. There are some insanely talented teams who have been waiting for this exact moment.
Given their chemistry, Dakota Kai & Raquel Gonzalez are easy picks for winners, though Xia Li looked unstoppable in her re-debut from Wednesday. It’s unclear what the prize is, but there is one thing that makes sense.
Bringing The WWE Women’s Tag Team Championship To NXT?
The winner of the men’s Dusty Rhodes Tag Team Classic gets a shot at the NXT Tag Team Championships, in addition to the trophy. It stands to reason that whichever team wins this tournament, will get a chance to face the current WWE Women’s Tag Champions, who just so happen to be former NXT Women’s Champions, Asuka & Charlotte Flair! They currently lack a strong set of challengers, but this tournament could build a team up to face these two megastars in a PPV match, perhaps even at Wrestlemania or the long rumored Evolution 2.
