Any chance of Conor McGregor and Manny Pacquiao clashing in a boxing ring appear to be slim according to a Pacquiao representative, who claimed that there is currently no interest in seeing the Irishman and Filipino going toe to toe. The comments come just days after McGregor was stunningly knocked out by Dustin Poirier in their rematch at UFC 257 in the second round.
However, the Irishman had always remained adamant that a fight with the legendary boxer could be on the cards. But, those chances seem incredibly slim after his defeat.
UFC News: Defeat Changes Everything
It appeared as though Pacquiao wasn’t about to wait around for McGregor, as shortly after his defeat, there were rumours that the boxer had agreed to a deal to fight Ryan Garcia. It was also urged that McGregor should focus on taking his throne back in UFC before even contemplating a return to the boxing ring. McGregor has only stepped foot in the boxing ring on one occasion, as he was beaten by Floyd Mayweather.
It looks almost certain that McGregor’s immediate future will be in the UFC, and a rematch against Poirier could be towards the top of his agenda. However, it is likely that he will need to wait for that rematch, as Poirier has set his sights on winning a title in UFC before granting a trilogy matchup against McGregor. Regardless, a fight between the two could be on the cards for later in the year.
UFC News: More Bad News For McGregor
It has been a bad week for McGregor, as the terrible news kept piling up. It was also revealed this week that the Irishman would be suspended from UFC action for up to the next six months due to the medical procedures in place in the UFC. That could delay his return to the ring until later in the year, which would be a blow for McGregor, as he revealed after the fight that he wanted to get back in the octagon as soon as possible.
It would seem that all the cards that McGregor had before the Poirier fight have now disappeared, and the opponent that he faces next will likely hinge on the opponent themselves rather than McGregor’s wishes. A rematch with Khabib looks permanently off the table at this point, while a shot a boxing world championship looks lightyears away.
