When this year’s Dusty Rhodes Tag Team Classic was announced, everyone knew to expect Grizzled Young Veterans to atleast make the semi finals. Last year’s runner ups only fell to the odd couple team of Matt Riddle & Pete Dunne, and this year could suffer a similar fate.

Their opponents tonight, and the only thing stopping back to back finals are Timothy Thatcher & Tommaso Ciampa, another odd couple team who Grizzled Young Veterans are keen on stepping past. GYV asked how things ended with their last tag team partners, and said that the trophy belongs to a true tag team.

Grizzled Young Veteran Show The Benefit Of Tag Team Chemistry

As Drake got on the apron, Ciampa hit a knee strike, and this one broke into a brawl. Thatcher went after Gibson, as Ciampa would throw Drake over the barricade. Gibson & Thatcher got in the ring, and the bell finally rang. Thatcher nabbed the arm of Gibson and nailed a knee strike. Ciampa tagged in, and went to work on the leg of Gibson.

Drake was back from the outside, and Gibson fought off a double wrist lock before being thrown into the corner. Gibson was thrown across the ring, Drake softened the impact and tagged in to stomp Thatcher down and nail a short arm clothesline. GYV got to their tag team flow, isolating Thatcher by pulling Ciampa off the apron before he could tag out.

Thatcher was pressed into the corner by Gibson as Drake rushed with a back elbow. They’d hit a double apron powerbomb on Ciampa, hurting that previously injured neck. Thatcher was the focus once again in the ring, as doctors checked on Ciampa outside. Quick tags kept GYV as fresh as ever, while Thatcher got more and more tired.

    Don’t Count Tommaso Ciampa Out

Thatcher rallied back with a big belly to belly suplex, but had no one to tag. Gibson struck from behind with a back suplex, before applying a tight rear chinlock, and used his foot to push himself back to the ring. It can’t be understated just how good Gibson is.

Thatcher was beaten down in the corner, and Ciampa was still on the floor. GYV set up the doomsday device, but Thatcher slipped off the shoulder of Gibson, and took Drake out of the sky with an uppercut.

Ciampa came back to life with a heart full of rage, nailing everything that moved with lariats in the ring after a tag. Drake took a German Suplex, and Gibson took one as well. The air raid crash to Gibson landed on Drake for a near fall, before Ciampa threw some hard chops. Fairytale Ending was set up, but Drake pushed to the corner for Gibson to tag in.

Punching Their Ticket To NXT Takeover

Gibson went for Helter Skelter, but Ciampa slipped out before hitting a jumping knee. A double chop to the throat from Gibson was followed by Helter Skelter, and Ciampa couldn’t tag out as Drake springboarded off his back to dropkick Thatcher. GYV nailed Doomsday Device, but Thatcher broke the pinfall up.

Gibson threw Thatcher out before taking a chop to the face, but Drake took Thatcher out with the dive. Drake almost took Willows Bell, but Gibson saved him at the last moment. One Ticket To Mayhem later, and GYV punched their ticket to another Dusty Rhodes Tag Team Classic final!

Grizzled Young Veterans might be the best tag team in WWE today, and they were robbed of a win last year in the finals. This match was fantastic, and could let GYV potentially write a wrong this Sunday at Takeover. All four men in this match played their roles perfectly, and it was as good as a TV tag team match gets. Match Rating: 4/5 (****)

Grizzled Young Veterans will face MSK this Sunday at NXT Takeover: Vengeance Day. Who will walk away with the Dusty Cup? Let us know what you think in the comment section down below.
