The UFC 262 press conference was definitely an interesting one as we got to witness an interesting altercation which was quite heated between Tony Ferguson and Michael Chandler with the highlight of the exchange being Ferguson claiming Chandler got his title shot by external influence rather than his achievements and abilities. Keep reading for the details.
Tony Ferguson who fights in the UFC lightweight division, standing at 6 ft 0 in (1.83 m) and a very impressive fighting record of 25 wins in 30 fights and only 5 losses of which 3 have been by decisions, truly a prolific fighter in the Octagon. Ferguson had a lot to say about Chandler’s title shot and spared neither words nor thoughts in the UFC 262 pre-fight press conference that held on Thursday, May 13th, 2021.
Tony Ferguson Accuses Michael Chandler of Using “Dana’s Privilege” During UFC 262 Press Conference!
Ferguson who has never challenged for the title, having previously missed out on a shot at the lightweight title with the previous champion Khabib Nurmagomedov because he blew his knee out a match prior felt Chandler’s title shot was unfair at the very least.
Ferguson during the pre-match press conference shouted at Chandler: “You f*cking dodged me too, Chandler you’re a b*tch.” Briefly acknowledging Michael Oliveira in his rant, he continued: “Every person out here except this guy [Charles Oliveira], that’s sitting next to me. I’m going to be real. You f*cking said no. I’m going to be real. You got this sh*t handed to you. You got Dana White privilege.”
“Dana White’s privilege” being a reference to the President and CEO of the UFC who didn’t take the line to heart at all and in fact had a brief laugh at the line. Ferguson also highlighted his race as a factor that had set him back in his UFC career especially in his title seeking sojourn. “It wasn’t meant for me to have the title. I would have gave everybody a chance. Right?! I’m f*cking awesome. No absolutely f*cking not.” Ferguson continued: “These guys are going to try to keep the title away from me as much as they can. I’m Mexican. It doesn’t matter if you’re color up here or not but I’m made with American parts too, so let’s f*cking go.”
Chandler who was present at the press conference also had a bit to say in his defense and why he also deserved the title shot; “I’ve been in this sport for over a decade. My resume speaks for itself…” Chandler said. Chandler went a bit further whilst heaping praise upon himself for some of is previous accomplishments in the ring. “I think my show against Dan Hooker, doing in two and a half minutes what Dustin Poirier couldn’t do in 25. Doing what Paul Felder couldn’t do in 25 minutes, I believe that was indicative of getting this title shot…”
Ferguson may have let out some of his disgruntlement during the press conference, but he would definitely be more focused on bouncing back from his two consecutive defeats in his fight against Beneil Dariush this weekend.
