As strange as it sounds given John Cena’s patriotic stance and support for the military, his recent apology to China for referring to Taiwan as a country has brought up a few debates on social media.
For us, it brought back memories from 1991 during the first Gulf War (yes, we know we’re showing our age here) when Sgt. Slaughter turned heel and became an Iraqi sympathizer.
It was a blow for many fans as we grew up with him on the popular cartoon GI Joe where he embodied everything great about the military and spirit of the United States as they fought against Cobra.
So when he turned his back on America (storyline) and became an Iraqi sympathizer, he got all sorts of heat.
He even admitted later that he received death threats and had to have guards around him to keep him safe.
In the end, he was defeated by Hulk Hogan and order was restored.
Since that was extremely successful storyline, is it really out of the realm of possibility for them to do something similar with John Cena?
Playing off Cena’s real life heat
John Cena has been under fire for his apology, and it practically screams to be used as fodder for a return to a WWE ring.
While we doubt Cena will go along with it, we can definitely imagine Vince McMahon trying to sell him on the idea.
And who can blame him? The WWE has made a hefty sum by taking real world events and using them in their storylines like Sgt Slaughter above and Randy Savage and Miss Elizabeth getting married.
It’s what they do, and with their ratings dropping or barely remaining steady, they’ll need something to juice things up when they start doing live shows again on July 15.
Who’s the hero?
As great as this could be as Cena would launch himself and the WWE into the stratosphere with this if done right, there’s no believable hero.
The names that come to mind off the bat are Drew McIntyre and Bobby Lashley. McIntyre would be the odds on favorite with Lashley a close second.
Both would exemplify the American dream, but we think Cena would have to defeat Lashley like Slaughter did the Ultimate Warrior.
We’re also not sure about McIntyre as he’s run his course and feels overly stale now. But there could be other options on the roster. Who do you think would be the perfect hero to face Cena in this scenario?
