Since it’s inception, All Elite Wrestling (AEW)’s flagship show Dynamite has been airing on TNT. This was important to many fans, as this put AEW Dynamite on the same channel as WCW Monday Nitro back during the Monday Night Wars. However in 2022, they will be moving to TBS. This keeps them in the mix of Warner Media, but changes things around just enough to have some concern. Eric Bischoff however views this as a chance for AEW to grow.
The Move To TBS Could Lead To AEW Gaining Viewers If Done Smartly
While speaking on his podcast, 83 Weeks, Eric Bischoff would see this as a good move.“I think it’s a brilliant move. Let’s look at it, and I don’t know how much money is involved, it doesn’t matter. Here’s what happened; AEW is moving from TNT on a Wednesday night at 8 p.m. over to TBS on a Wednesday night at 8 p.m. The audience is going to find them, there’s not going to be a loss of audience.”
However, when you add in the new show of AEW: Rampage? It is a great idea. “But they got a show on Friday night following SmackDown. Guess what I’m doing if I’m Turner? Tony, are you listening? I’m buying local advertising inside of SmackDown in all of the markets in this country that I want to promote my shows in, live events or otherwise. And while people are watching SmackDown, I’m going to be telling them ‘hey, when SmackDown’s over, guess what we’re doing over here?’ And you’re going to drag some of that audience with you. That’s not a positive, that’s a giant positive, a giant net gain.”
Viewers Will Follow AEW Wherever They Go
There shouldn’t be much concern about AEW losing viewers in this deal. They have managed to build up a very loyal fanbase, who will ensure a strong move from network to network. Ratings will actually likely rise briefly during the move, as going to a new network generally comes with a major advertising push and a big card planned for the debut.
AEW is sticking around, whether some fans like it or not. This deal will likely just help them make even more money, get higher ratings, and with more viewers simply comes more power in the wrestling industry. Do you expect the move to TBS to help AEW grow?
