UFC Welterweight division contender Colby Covington says he’s never heard of a Khamzat Chimaev, and even asks if the guy is ranked.
Covington is one of the top contenders inside the 170-pound division. Colby finds himself hoping for a long-awaited title rematch against champion Kamaru Usman in his next fight. However, one opponent that doesn’t interest him in the least is Khamzat Chimaev. Last year’s UFC sensation fighter finished his first three and so far only fights in the promotion in brutal fashion.
Colby Covington says Khamzat Chimaev is not up to his standards
Following those victories, Chimaev has been dealing with the ravages of Covid19. Khamzat has been sidelined from the octagon since September of last year. However, the Chechen fighter says he is ready to return this summer. In addition, he insists on fighting an opponent inside the top 15 of the division.
Colby, for his part, has no interest whatsoever in fighting Chimaev. The controversial fighter stated that he has ‘never heard’ of the Chimaev fighter.
“I’ve never heard of him, does this guy have a win against someone ranked? Oh, he doesn’t. Everybody’s hyping these kids these days.”
As far as Covington is concerned, in this day and age of fights, it’s all about ‘hype’ and less about having quality wins on your resume against championship level opponents.
“That’s the state and age of UFC now, it’s all about the ‘hype.’ There’s no credibility. I wouldn’t say there’s no credibility, UFC is a great organization, but the way people get excited about them is a joke. Go out and show it with your resume. Look at my resume. I’ve beaten multiple UFC champions. When someone decides to beat multiple UFC champions and beat the best in the world, then let them come yell at me and I’ll knock them down a step.”
