Everything seems to indicate that 2021 will be the year we will see Nick Diaz back in the UFC octagon.
For a few months now, Nick Diaz‘s return has been rumored. While the public has been interested and even excited about the possibility, Dana White always said it wouldn’t happen. Now, the UFC president admits to changing his mind.
Dana White now confident of Nick Diaz’s return this year
“I wasn’t very convinced about it. I didn’t think it was going to happen, but it looks like it will happen. It looks like Nick Diaz will fight this year.”
Diaz has not fought since 2015 when he lost by decision to Anderson Silva. The bout would later go on to be declared a no contest due to both fighters testing positive for banned substances.
Nick put his complications with USADA behind him in 2018, so he has been eligible to fight again. For a couple of years Diaz showed zero interest in competing again. However last year some images surfaced of him training and looking fit. Shortly thereafter his agent would confirm that he was working towards a return to fighting.
Although Dana White initially ruled out any possibility, he now admits that the promoter has been in talks with the fighter. In fact, just a few weeks ago, Dana himself spoke personally with Nick. Now, White confirms that the matter is well underway.
“The last time I saw him was in Jacksonville, but it looks like it will happen. We’ll see. The matchmakers have talked to him, but I don’t know exactly where we’re at, but it looks promising. This is not something you’ve heard me say before when I’ve been asked ‘Do you think Nick Diaz will fight this year?’ My answer is always ‘absolutely sure he won’t.’ That’s changed, this time it looks promising.”
At the moment Dana has no opponent or date in mind for Nick Diaz. Who would you like to see him face in the octagon?
