Nate Diaz returned to the UFC in astounding fashion, taking on rising Welterweight Leon Edwards. Although Edwards won the fight via unanimous decision, Nate Diaz, as always, captured the hearts of fans with a fifth-round resurgence.
The fight meant a lot for both men. Nate Diaz, The Ultimate Fighter alumnus and UFC veteran, returned to the Octagon after a lengthy hiatus to see if he’s still got the goods. Edwards is gunning for a rematch with the only man in the UFC to defeat him thus far: Welterweight champion Kamaru Usman. While the two took shots at each other leading up to the fight, post-match, Diaz was full of advice for the younger fighter.
Diaz to Edwards: “Name your price… or they’ll name it for you!”
Leon Edwards said on Twitter that Diaz told him: “Don’t let these motherf***ers tell you ain’t sh*t name your price or they will name it for you.”
Amidst the media controversy surrounding the UFC’s fighter pay structures, Diaz’s words ring true. Edwards is one of the brighter contenders in the division, and there are very few men alive who can say they fought Nate Diaz and won. He ought to be in contention for the title, but Dana White is more interested in a title rematch for Colby Covington.
The UFC may well be telling Leon Edwards that he “ain’t sh*t” through ignoring his claim to the title. He may not be in a position to name his price if he wants to challenge for the Welterweight belt.
Prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, he was due to face Tyron Woodley. Had that fight gone ahead, and had he won, he would have been given the title shot. Instead, that event was cancelled, Edwards refused to travel to the US during the lockdown and ensuing chaos, and he fell out of Dana White’s good graces.
He was due to fight Khamzat Chimaev until both men succumbed to serious cases of COVID-19, from which they appear to have recovered. Leon Edwards took on Belal Muhammad this March, which was declared no contest due to an unfortunate eye poke. This took him to nine wins out of ten fights. He surely expects to be in the queue for a rematch with Usman, but only time will tell.
Do you think Leon Edwards can take on Kamaru Usman and win? Will he be given the title shot after Colby, or is there another Welterweight in line to challenge for the strap? Let us know in the comments.
