We all have that one time (hopefully just one) when we’re starting a new job, on a first date, meeting someone for the first time, and so on where we goof, and The Undertaker shared his first pro match goof against none other than Bruiser Brody.
This is one of those moments that’s just awesome to hear as those involved can joke about it, and it shows that even some of the most iconic wrestlers in history had his moments.
In an extra scene on Broken Skulls Sessions, The Undertaker talked about his first profession wrestling match on June 26, 1987 in WCCW as the masked Texas Red against Bruiser Brody.
Deadman’s reveal
We’ll let him tell it, with special thanks to @wrestlinghistorian for the transcript.
“My first match is against Bruiser Brody. My skill level, I mean I’m greener than shit, but I get in the ring and that stupid gene flips in the back of your head and I’m looking at him going, ‘I’m bigger than he is.’
“So ding, ding, ding, and as soon as we tie up I’m pushing and he’s like ‘Okay, lighten up, kid’ so I’m going to give him the push-off and when I do, I clip him in the chin a little bit. He don’t know me from Adam.
“We tie up again, boom. I grab an arm, so I’m standing there with an arm bar, I just grabbed it, right? I don’t know how I got so stupid…really. So he’s about to shoot me off, and I yell: ‘Clothesline!’ I’m calling the match!
“I ain’t got no brains!
“All of a sudden, that furry boot comes up out of nowhere and WHAM! My eyes rolled in the back of my head. Oh…wow, okay.”
“He says, ‘Come on. We’re going for a walk.’ He takes me and throws me out. People that don’t know. There was always that table right next to ringside and the chairs were metal with the wood slats.
“He slams me on that table and told me, ‘Don’t move.’ So I hear that chair getting folded up and he came back full force right across my shoulder blades. And when I tell you, the wood snapped, that is not an exaggeration. It sounded like a gun went off.” – The @Undertaker Broken Skull Sessions interview, November 24, 2019.
For the record, Brody won the match but there’s another cool fact about this match @awrestlinghistorian pointed out, and it’s that Paul Bearer was Percy Pringle III in this match and the Undertaker’s original manager.
How cool is that for an Undertaker moment?
