Georges St-Pierre isn’t holding his breath for a match against Khabib Nurmagomedov. When asked about the likelihood of a potential bout between two of the greatest mixed martial artists of all time, GSP wasn’t exactly hopeful. “We’re never going to see it, unfortunately.”
Both men are widely acknowledged to be among the greatest ever to grace the sport of MMA. The idea of a matchup between them is tantalizing to fight fans, particularly in the era of “what if” bouts like Tyson v Jones Jr actually occurring. Although both have retired from competition, neither is so past his prime that he would be ineffective in a fight.
GSP on Khabib superfight: “We’re never going to see it”
Nurmagomedov retired only recently at the very top of his game, after dominating Justin Gaethje. It’s no secret that UFC President Dana White wants Khabib back, as the Russian is one of the UFC’s biggest stars in Russia and the Middle East. A fight between these two greats would mean huge numbers for White and the UFC, but with both settling into retirement it remains an unlikely prospect.
GSP was, as always, gracious in his position on the matter. He may be disappointed not to fight Nurmagomedov, as the legend believes it would be an amazing fight. He does, however, see a silver lining to the situation:
“I believe if you make that fight 10 times, it could be 10 different outcomes, but we’re never going to see it, unfortunately. Timing was an issue with the UFC.
It’s unfortunate, but it could be seen as a positive that both of us finished our careers with a great legacy, and nothing has been tainted, so it’s good,”
This “tainting” would be a loss for either man. GSP retired undefeated since 2007, while Khabib retired with a massive 29-0 record. One of them would have to lose should they fight, which GSP sees as “tainting” their impressive legacies.
While St-Pierre makes a good point regarding the fight, fans and the UFC brass alike would love to see it happen. It’s a fool’s errand to put anything past Dana White in his quest to bring the UFC to the top of the sporting world, which a superfight between two of the sport’s greats would surely assist in accomplishing. Khabib remains happy in retirement, but if his mother allows him out to play, we might just see the return of the Russian Eagle.
Do you think this highly anticipated hypothetical will occur? If so, who takes the win, and in doing so settling countless barroom arguments about the MMA GOAT? Let us know in the comments.
