Times are changing in the WWE once again as they’re heading back out and live crowds are returning, and as such the final Raw of the WWE Thunderdome Era was taped and will air as the Go Home episode for the Money in the Bank Pay-per-view.
The following Raw will air live from the American Airlines Center in Dallas, Texas with fans.
It’s going to be a stark contrast to what we’ve grown accustomed to seeing, but it’s going to be great seeing fans in attendance again and the wrestlers will thrive having an audience feed their adrenaline.
An interesting fact that’s been reported online, so take it with a grain of salt, is that since this episode was taped the same day as NXT Great American Bash, there were no NXT dark matches before hand.
While the last year has been trying at the best of times, the WWE and other companies made the most of it, with the WWE choosing to go the ultra controlled way that required tons of micromanagement.
In short, nothing surprising. But now they’re going to out in front of fans and it’s going to be really fun and interesting to see fan reaction given how much the storytelling has fallen off the last year.
And that brings us to another topic.
Where does the WWE Thunderdome Era rate?
Fans always compare the different eras. It’s one of the perks of yesteryear and it gives us a chance to compare various generations and weigh their pros and cons.
For the WWE, the Thunderdome Era was difficult and trying to make the best out of a bad situation and they deserve props for being inventive.
Just like with other companies, WWE’s Superstars raised their game as they had to be on point constantly to ensure they gave the best performance every time.
Without fans there, they were working cold and had to trust in their planning of the matches. We saw some awesome performances over the last year that compare to previous eras favorably.
But there’s always a but and a problem, and here it comes.
Remember when we said how the storytelling has fallen off? Out of all of the creativeness the WWE poured out, this was the worst of any era in memory for us.
They made the PG Era look near Shakespearian at times. The lack of cohesion, flow, and momentum shifted regularly and felt like it was slapped together as each match began more times than not.
There were some good moments with a storyline here or there, but overall it felt like a listless ship and they set new record lows ratings wise.
Had it not been for some awesome in ring performances, things could’ve been far worse.
Overall, we think the Thunderdome era did as good as it could have under the circumstances and the in ring performances and technological angles puts it just below the PG Era.
But the challenges should count for something, so maybe it’s closer to even if we use a sliding scale? There’s plenty of room for criticism but they did some incredible things this last year.
