Ever since they were introduced back in 2019, the WWE Women’s Tag Team Championships have had an odd history of ups and downs. Things started off well with Sasha Banks & Bayley as the first champions, and quickly went weird when they lost them just over a month later. We are now on our 7th set of champions after Natalya & Tamina beat Nia Jax & Shayna Baszler for the belts, but they could become vacant for the first time after an injury.
Natalya Suffered An Ankle Injury On Monday Night RAW
In a match on the July 26th episode of Monday Night RAW, during a match against Eva Marie and Doudrop (aka Piper Niven) Natalya would suffer an injury to her ankle. This was the first major injury in her almost two decade career, and had to come at a time when she was a champion. It was bad enough to require surgery, with Natalya giving an update on Twitter.
“Today my surgeon told me that I’m an anomaly. It’s been an intense week to say the least. All I asked was to be put back in the fight and FAST. Surgery will fix me, defending our championships will drive me.”
Will WWE Bother To Vacate These Championships?
This puts the status of the belt into question. Natalya seems to be keen on getting back to the ring before it becomes an issue, and WWE has been more lenient this year on their titles. Sheamus was out of action as United States Champion with a broken nose following a stiff strike from Humberto Carillo, and didn’t have to let his title go.
WALTER in NXT UK recently injured his hand, and his NXT UK Championship defense against Ilja Draguonov was simply pushed back to give him time to heal. This is starting a trend, where if a title is one of a smaller scale, WWE will not be too quick to pull it and change plans. If Natalya is set to be out for a while, they will likely have no choice, but for now, it seems like Tamina’s first title reign will last for a while longer.
If WWE forces Natalya & Tamina to vacate their championships, who should be next in line? Let us know what you think in the comment section down below.
