The new animated series, ‘The Prince,’ has caused outrage in the UK over its satirical portrayal of Prince George.
HBO Max’s The Prince Has Been Blasted For Mocking Prince George
The show, which aired on HBO Max last week, has a star-studded cast, including Orlando Bloom and Sophie Turner. While some fans may brush it off as light-hearted humour, the depiction of George has caused many people to feel outraged. After all, George is only 8-years-old and has been portrayed in a very spoilt manner.
The outrage has gotten vocal, especially since George had been a victim of social media abuse following his attendance at the Euro 2020 final. That is why there is a worry that it could significantly damage the mental health of George, who has already had to see his grandfather Prince Philip pass away very recently.
This has been coupled with his uncle (Prince Harry) and auntie ( Meghan Markle) making horrifying disclosures about the wider family. In an interview on Good Morning Britain, Dr Shola Mos-Shogbamimu stressed how distasteful this show was for mocking children. She said: “Children are off-limits. Creating a parody to make fun of an eight-year-old is not funny.
“It’s uncalled for, and it goes against our collective sense of responsibility. I get people’s desire to make fun of the royal family, but you do not need the misshapen caricature of an eight-year-old child in order to do so.” Despite the calls for greater protection on children’s mental health, Harry and Meghan have ironically remained quiet over this.
This is significant given that they had expressed so much concern about their own mental health during their time in the Royal family. After all, Meghan admitted to having suicidal thoughts, as well as disparaging comments being directed against her son (Archie) over the colour of his skin.
Nevertheless, not everyone has been left offended. Others have chosen to see it all in jest. Leo Kearse, who happens to be a comedian, remarked: “It depends which eight-year-old child you’re talking about. If this is a future head of state, someone born into the royal family, then I don’t think it’s really punching down to mock him.”
