NJPW Summer Struggle 08/08 Recap - Roppongi 3K Fall Further More In Super Junior Tag League

Yesterday we saw the start of the latest tournament in New Japan Pro Wrestling. The Super Junior Tag League League kicked off with three matches, having all six teams in action. This tournament is only just getting started, and even the losing teams from Night One have lots of time to catch up.

We saw the reigning IWGP Junior Heavyweight Champion Robbie Eagles and his partner Tiger Mask IV pick up their first win, Suzuki-Gun’s El Desperado & Yoshinobu Kanemaru show their dominance once again. There was even a classic main event from the current IWGP Junior Heavyweight Tag Team Champions; El Phantasmo & Taiji Ishimori as they bested Roppongi 3K. Tonight, action continues.

    But First, The Undercard Action

However like most shows in NJPW, there was some undercard action. These matches mostly exist to just get more talent infront of fans. The opening match saw Great Bash Heel & Toru Yano team up in a losing effort to the BULLET CLUB unit of Chase Owens, Jado & Yujiro Takahashi. In a twist, BULLET CLUB won this match, when Chase Owens rolled up Honma for the win in 9 minutes and 38 seconds.

The second undercard match was a clash between Los Ingobernables de Japon members BUSHI, SANADA, Shingo Takagi & Tetsuya Naito, who once again took on the NEVER Openweight Six Man Tag Team Champions and a veteran of the roster. This time, Hirooki Goto, Tomohiro Ishii & YOSHI-HASHI picked Satoshi Kojima. Kojima would end up being the one to take the fall, after taking Last of The Dragon from the IWGP World Heavyweight Champion after 16 minutes and 53 seconds of action.

The Super Junior Tag League Sees The Same Winners As Yesterday

Tournament action started with El Desperado & Yoshinobu Kanemaru taking on Gedo & Dick Togo. The shocking part of this match is not that Desperado & Kanemaru won, but rather that NJPW allowed Gedo & Togo to have a match that went 18 minutes long. Kanemaru put away Gedo with the Deep Impact, pushing the Suzuki-Gun unit up to 4 points.

In the second tournament match, the IWGP Junior Heavyweight Champion Robbie Eagles and Tiger Mask IV met Roppongi 3K. 3K are generally favorites in this tournament, making it all the more surprising that they have now dropped their second match, with Eagles forcing YOH to tap out after 14 minutes and 24 seconds to the Ron Miller Special. That is the move that won him singles gold, but Roppongi 3K were dejected after this loss.

Finally, the IWGP Junior Heavyweight Tag Team Champions were in the main event, this time facing Master Wato & Ryusuke Taguchi. Wato & Taguchi put up a great effort in this match, but in the end the duo of El Phantasmo & Taiji Ishimori was too much for them to handle. El Phantasmo dropped Wato with the CR2 after 15 minutes and 42 seconds to get the win.

This puts yesterday’s winners all up to 4 points, while everyone else stays at 0 points. Will this be a running trend in this tournament, or is a big comeback from Roppongi 3K incoming? Let us know what you think in the comment section down below.
