“Suga” Sean O’Malley is one of the UFC’s hottest prospects. With his outlandish appearance, brash persona, and penchant for rapid knockout victories, many compare O’Malley to a young Conor McGregor. One man who is unconvinced by “suga” and his sweet talk is former bantamweight champion TJ Dillashaw.
Talking to Submission Radio, Dillashaw explained exactly why he doesn’t think O’Malley has what it takes to rise to the top. “I don’t think he’ll become champion.
Why TJ Dillashaw Doesn’t See A Belt in Sean O’Malley’s Future
He’s got too many holes and they’re feeding him the right fights ‘cause he’s a huge draw, right?
For one, they pumped him up, they put him in the UFC pump-up machine. They can do that to pretty much anyone if you have a little bit of character, if you can talk whatsoever, be a little bit colorful, they’ll pump you up.
And then he’s done a good job promoting himself. He’s done a really good job of that. And it takes work, man. When you see these guys that get pumped up, they’re also putting in the hard work, so he does a good job of that.”
While Dillashaw was quick to praise O’Malley’s promotional ability so early in his fighting career, he was less complimentary when it came to Sean’s fighting style. Dillashaw referenced O’Malley’s sole career loss in the UFC as an example of why O’Malley won’t be challenging for the bantamweight strap anytime soon.
“But we’ve seen what happened as soon as he fought ‘Chito’. Chito is more of a top-ranked fighter, and he got finished in the first round.
I mean, I don’t think that he’ll be champion, but he’s a good draw. Hopefully he can make it far enough to where I could use some of that thunder and get paid off it.”
TJ Dillashaw only recently returned to the UFC after a two-year suspension due to performance enhancing drug use. His comeback fight ended in a controversial decision victory over Cory Sandhagen, and Dillashaw wants to fight again as soon as he can.
Jose Aldo wants TJ Dillashaw, and TJ Dillashaw wants to reclaim the bantamweight title, which remains with Aljamain Sterling at least until his rematch against Petr Yan.
TJ Dillashaw is not wrong in that O’Malley will eventually have to fight, and defeat, ranked opponents. That’s if Sean O’Malley wants to challenge for a title, which may not be a goal of his. O’Malley recently refused a fight in New York because he prefers fighting in Vegas, so perhaps the UFC prospect is happy for the time being to remain a prospect.
