Kyle O’Reilly might have picked off a bit more than he can chew last week when he agitated Duke Hudson. O’Reilly was one of the men who stepped up to the challenge of new NXT Champion Samoa Joe, but he will have to get past the 6’5″ threat of Hudson first. Hudson is looking to bounce back after failing to make the finals of the NXT Breakout Tournament, and dropping O’Reilly would be just the way to accomplish this. Hudson has the tools to be a star, but is he ready to use them?
Duke Hudson Targets The Injured Ribs Of Kyle O’Reilly
Hudson would get a lukewarm reaction on his way to the ring, but still looked like a star. Meanwhile, O’Reilly would get a fairly loud and positive reaction – despite the chants of bullshit when he won the Undisputed Finale. Hudson wasn’t too concerned about O’Reilly, who looked ready to chop him down despite being bandaged up at the ribs.
O’Reilly would play defensive early on, hitting a quick punch before dodging Hudson and peppering him with strikes. Hudson dropped him with a single punch, but O’Reilly went after the leg on the mat before countering a scoop slam into a sleeper hold. This attempt at submission was broken quiet easily with a slam, before almost ending up in a heel hook.
Hudson would break the hold and hit a punch to the ribs. He’d follow up with a knee to the ribs, before applying a waistlock. O’Reilly would be able to quickly counter up into an abdominal stretch, which was countered with a hip toss. Hudson threw him into the corner chest first, played some air guitar, before stomping O’Reilly out.
The Bigger They Are – The Harder They Fall
Some trash talking would fire up O’Reilly, who would get a roll up for a two count before a knee to the midsection. He’d look for more strikes, before Hudson nailed a gorgeous backbreaker as we went to commercial break. Coming back from said break, the beatdown on the back of O’Reilly would just continue.
O’Reilly would break out of a submission, but Hudson was too big to really do much until he could take him down. Some quick strikes would take him down, and O’Reilly could hit a running forearm before working on the arm of Hudson with an armbreaker, before a dragon screw. A big kick to the leg took Hudson down, but it took O’Reilly too long to follow up and took a big lariat.
O’Reilly would apply a tight guillotine choke, but Hudson fought through and hit a battering ram into the corner. Hudson would throw O’Reilly with a belly to belly suplex, but only managed a two count. O’Reilly would be able to cut Hudson down again with a dragon screw, and hit a knee drop from the top rope the back of the knee. Heel hook applied, Hudson tapped out and this one was done.
A solid clash of styles, with O’Reilly pulling the best out of Hudson who played the cocky powerhouse perfectly. O’Reilly was a real underdog here, but his high ring IQ and submission skills really helped him win in the end. Easily the best match of Hudson yet. Match Rating: 3.5/5 (*** 1/2)
