Tyson Fury’s calendar might be crammed with big-money fights in the boxing ring for the foreseeable future, but his father isn’t ruling out a move to mixed martial arts. In fact, John Fury claims that his son, the WBC and The Ring heavyweight champion, is a surprisingly powerful fighter with weapons beyond his hands.
Fury told JOE that he has seen Tyson “excel” in other areas of combat sports. “With the right training, he does very well.
Will Boxing Champ Tyson Fury Move to MMA?
I’ve seen him excel in different sports, wrestling. I’ve got some sort of an idea what Tyson was from that. And he likes to get involved, Tyson, and I know what he’s like from being a kid.
He can use more than his hands, believe it or not. And he’s quick and light on his feet. And his balance is good. And I do believe if a top MMA trainer took him on, he could do big things with him. Ask Darren Till, he’s done the work with him.”
Tyson Fury is astonishingly mobile for such a big man, and he earned a fearsome reputation for durability in the ring. The switch from boxing to mixed martial arts rarely goes well for boxers uncomfortable with kicks and grappling, but by the same token it’s rare to see mixed martial artists excel in the boxing ring. Does Tyson Fury have enough versatility as a fighter to pose a serious threat in mixed martial arts?
“He’s got a good forearm smash and all that kind of thing. The knees go up, the head goes in, the elbows. I’ve seen him do it out of boxing, see. I’ve seen him fighting outside, this that and the other. I know what he’s capable of, and with the right training, yes he could do that.
I think the rougher it gets for Tyson the better he likes it. It brings what we call something different to his job, doesn’t it? It gives him more goals to achieve and more things to look at and address.
And I think that’s what Tyson wants. And when he does finally retire from boxing, he’ll probably go to that and probably come back to boxing, whatever he does. But he will engage on that, you’ll see.”
Tyson Fury once promised to “smash” UFC heavyweight champion Francis Ngannou. While a the time it seemed that this might take place in the boxing ring, if Fury’s father is to be believed, we might just see Tyson Fury take on the world’s hardest puncher in the Octagon.
At a time when YouTubers are boxing wrestlers on prime-time pay-per-view, it’s not out of the question. Would you want to see Tyson Fury fight in MMA? Let us know in the comments.
