Humberto Carrilo is one of WWE’s fastest rising stars, with his dashing good looks and impeciable wrestling ability, he’s become a quick favorite on Monday Night RAW. He’s become a challenger for the United States championship, currently held by AJ Styles. Despite all this, there is something else important in Carrilos life; that being his college education.
In an interview with Súper Luchas he spoke on how he handled working as a wrestler while also going to school to become a physiotherapist. The quotes have been translated to the best of my and Google Translates ability.
On Juggling School & Wrestling
As a college graduate myself, I can attest to just how much time you need to dedicate to your studies, and I couldn’t imagine also wrestling full time while keeping on top of my studies, however that is exactly what Humberto Carrilio accomplished.
“I put the dates that i could work. I’m about to end my career in physiotherapy. When I was independent, I studied, and if the matches overlapped with exams, especially with finals, I obviously gave priority to my degree. That is, I put those barriers on myself to cancel a company or a promoter, because the priority was the classes; I even had classes on Saturdays. Thank God, everything already accommodated me. Last year I had my graduation party and a week later I was in NXT. Now we are pending to conclude the titling process. ”
On Traveling Back To Mexico For Final Exams
Humberto is still just finishing up the final exams to finish his studies, and have this backup plan fully thought out. Imagine being a main feature and title contender on a major television show and still going to college in another country to graduate. That is real dedication, and dedication like that will shine through in everything he does.
“Last week I went to my Faculty, in Monterrey, to present my theoretical exam. And in a few days I will have the practical test. It happens that here, when you finish your studies, you must pass a year to apply for the exams. This is the last one. Again, I always had in mind that I should first finish my career, because in this wrestling we are aware that we do not know how long we will last. We don’t know how we are going to get out of the ring. This may not be forever, and that is why it is important to have professional support. The fight is for some a hobby, but for me it is a passion. And yet it is very important to always be backed by something else. I am very happy with everything that has happened to me in recent weeks.”
Placing a focus on his education was wise. It’s smart to bring a strong backup plan to the wrestling industry, as you never know when that dream can come crashing down. A good example of this is Britt Baker of AEW (All Elite Wrestling), who works full time as a dentist while also being an active member of their roster. She will close up her practice on Tuesday, and get on a plane to be at an AEW Dynamite show the very next day, ready to compete.
Meeting With Vince McMahon
When it comes to success in WWE, impressing the man in charge is a very good way to do exactly that, and judging from the following comments from Humberto, he’s done just that.
“On one occasion, when i was in 205 Live, i had the opportunity to talk with him. He congratulated me for my work, told me that i am doing things very well and not despair. He said he likes the way i work and is happy with the results. Those comments, coming from someone like him, are very encouraging.”
Humberto shows dedication and drive to succeed which is so crucial within wrestling, and why he is on such a high platform at only 24 years old. His career will be one to follow closely, as it will only be up from here for the future lucha sensation.
