That is according to major journalist Richard Eden. Harry, for his part, signed a deal that is reportedly worth $100 million with the platform.
While it is seen as a way for him to express his story, following his departure from the Royal family in 2020, the motives behind it could have been all monetary.
In an interview, Richard questioned Harry’s decision to defend Netflix’s approach to airing shows about the Royals. He said: “I think there is a fat chance of Harry and Meghan giving up their very lucrative Netflix deal.
“It was a Faustian pact. Harry…defended the Crown…It was kind of excruciating because you’re wondering why he is doing that? It felt like he was justifying it to himself, maybe.”
The consequences of this could be severe. Richard hinted that Harry might not be in full control over the editing parts of the show. Naturally, there will be repercussions over what he can say and how it will translate on screen.
At a time when Harry has already distanced himself from the Royal family, this is the last thing that he needs. He added: “The thing is, he’s got no control, he’s just signed a deal with a huge streaming giant, and they can do what they like.
“And there’ll be more examples of this, I’m sure.” By acting in that way, Harry revealed his real motives: money. Richard expanded on how this decision will come back to haunt him, as Netflix will want to make sure that they get value for money.
In this way, Harry’s life could become an open book, much to his detriment. Richard’s following comments confirmed as much: “We saw that in the Oprah interview where he said ‘we did these deals because we were desperate for money,’ which would have horrified the executives at Netflix, I think.
“Because you want to sign people who are really keen to make programmes and not doing it for just a quick bit of cash.” We will have to see how this will all play out.
