James Michael Tyler, who was best known for being on the hit TV show Friends, has sadly died at the age of 59 from prostate cancer.

The actor introduced himself to the fans by playing Gunther, who was the manager of the Central Perk coffee shop that became synonymous with the show. And given that the Friends franchise has had reunions since its end, things will never be the same without such a crucial member of the show.
In an official statement by the family, they said: “The world knew him as Gunther (the seventh “Friend), from the hit series Friends, but Michael’s loved ones knew him as an actor, musician, cancer-awareness advocate, and loving husband.”
Although the news has also led to huge sadness amongst the fans of the franchise, looking back, the writing was on the wall. In 2018, James went for a check-up in order to see what was wrong with this body.
Shortly after, doctors informed him that he was suffering from prostate cancer. Although he received immediate treatment which did improve his health, the cancer spread beyond the initial regions, which came to a head during the pandemic.
In an interview on Today, James admitted that he feared the worst. He revealed: “I was diagnosed with advanced prostate cancer, which had spread to my bones.
“I’ve been dealing with that diagnosis for almost the past three years. … It’s stage 4 [now]. Late-stage cancer. So eventually, you know, it’s gonna probably get me.”
Several people on social media have come out to send their warm wishes. Fans have also come out in droves to send their condolences. This has extended to the stars of the show too.
In response to the news, Jennifer Anniston stated: “Thank you for the laughter you brought to the show and to all of our lives. You will be so missed,” while Matt LeBlanc noted: “We had a lot of laughs, buddy. You will be missed. RIP, my friend.”
