205 Live might be the most odd show in the history of WWE. It was started up following the conclusion of the highly praised Cruiserweight Classic – and as the name implied, was going to be a live show focused on the Cruiserweight roster. For a long time it was just that, but even that barely scratched the surface of the original concept, as ex-WWE Cruiserweight Champion Tony Nese would reveal.
Vince McMahon Stopped Triple H From Seeing His Vision Come True, Reveals Tony Nese
While speaking with Chris Van Vilet, Tony Nese discussed everything from his recent signing with AEW, and what 205 Live was like. The most interesting bit however comes in what the original plan for 205 Live would have been.
“It was Triple H’s idea, it was his baby. He wanted the show to have a yearly tournament, win/loss records, all that stuff. He wanted it to have a different feel. As soon as it was announced that the cruiserweights would be a part of RAW, that was where Vince was like, ‘No, it’s my show now.’ All that other stuff went out the window. We even joked about it. We said, ‘This is RAW lite.’”
An Endless Cruiserweight Classic Would Have Been A Fan Favorite Show
This version of 205 Live would have just been like an endless Cruiserweight Classic – which would make perfect sense. That is what fans wanted – but WWE wasn’t run by Triple H at the time, nor is it now. By the time 205 Live was given back to Triple H, even he didn’t want to use it. Nowadays, it’s more akin to NXT-lite, being used to help give lesser experienced names some extra ring time ahead of NXT 2.0.
At the end of the day, we got some incredible matches from 205 Live, with many from names like Tony Nese, Cedric Alexander, Mustafa Ali, Buddy Murphy, and more. The good days are over, but they’ll be able to be enjoyed forever as it’s all still on Peacock (or WWE Network if you’re not in the United States)
Tony Nese makes his AEW in-ring debut on the next episode of Dark, where he will face Fuego Del Sol. Do you think 205 Live would have been better off with the direction Triple H wanted? Let us know what you think in the comment section down below.
