A TikTok video has gone viral following the news that George Washington University had been broken into before being vandalised.
Jewish Students Outraged After A Torah Was Damaged At George Washington University Following A Break In
The primary reason why this video gained so much traction was due to the fact that a copy of the Jewish Torah had been targeted and damaged. This raised a lot of emotions as it was deemed to be a religious hate crime.
It is not clear yet why the perpetrators had decided to do this, nor is it clear whether this was a coordinated attack. In response, the Jewish community came out in droves in order to show collective support over what had happened.
In the video here, we can see many members of the Jewish community standing side-by-side in solidarity. The text in the video included the following words: “Their small Torah was ripped apart & had detergent poured all over it.”
And this was only the start. According to The Washington Post, there were marches on campus from members of the Jewish community who were clearly dissatisfied over the lack of action that was being taken.
Chris Osborne, who happens to be the President of George Washington’s Tau Kappa Epsilon chapter fraternity, had this to say: “[It is an] act of anti-Semitism.”
While there is nothing controversial in what Chris has said, it is important to note that there were other religious texts which were singled out in the attack. Therefore, it would be more pertinent to state that this was an attack against religious texts in general.
Chris stated: “There was a Christian Bible and a Jewish Torah in the room. Only the Jewish Torah was vandalised. I believe it was a hate crime.”
As of now, the authorities are no closer to finding out who was responsible for this heinous act. In the meantime, they have begun an investigation to bring those who were responsible to account.
If the perpetrators are found, there is a high likelihood that they would be doing some major time behind bars. And in any event, if it turns out that the defendants were in fact students, then their time at university would most certainly be over.
