Prince William had reportedly decided to forbid any Royal aides from speaking to the media after criticism of his late mother, Princess Diana.
Prince William Had Reportedly Banned Royal Aides From Speaking To The Media
These concerns came to the fore when William expressed his disapproval towards the BBC’s role in Martin Bashir’s interview with Diana that had occurred in 1995.
Martin, for his part, was the same journalist who had interviewed Michael Jackson before his allegations of suspected child abuse came to light. Therefore, William was rightly concerned that this interview may have shown his mother in a negative manner.
In addition, reports stated that Martin had obtained the interview by deceit. This had included allegedly using fake documents. As such, William felt he had no choice but to be more careful over what was said to the media.
A source told the Sun: “William was clear from the start that we were never to brief and never to say anything about anyone in the other households.
“He’d lived through that in the ’90s with his parents during the ‘War of the Waleses’ and doesn’t ever want it happening again.”
This was not the only incident that made William become more cautious. Another BBC programme entitled ‘The Princes and The Press’ is looking into the relationship between William and Prince Harry during their earlier years.
And given that it is clear the two brothers are not on the best terms, the Royals were apparently outraged that they did not have a chance to address the claims which were being made in the series.
The source added: “He’s in a much better place [with the press] than his brother, and the things that would bother him don’t. Harry will hopefully get there too.”
However, the BBC defended its position. They felt that by working in the media, their job was to ensure that they reported things that were in the public interest.
And given that the Royal family is part of the governing system, it was only natural to focus on them. In response to the series, the BBC said: “The programme is about how royal journalism is done and features a range of journalists.”
