A TikTok video has gone viral after one user was accused of perpetuating Islamophobia online.
TikTok User Accused Of Islamophobia After Commenting About The Burka-‘Tell Me That You’re An Islamophobe’
According to reports, TikToker @anotherscienceguy decided to upload the following video in which he made certain observations towards a female gym user, who had decided to cover most of her body when she was working out.
In the said video, the uploader is heard saying the following comments: “I’ve been joking for a while now that as a result of the MeTooMovement, women were going to reinvent the burka and start covering up.
“Rather than [the burka] being a symbol of women’s oppression, it was going to be one of empowerment.” His comments drew criticism for the following reasons.
First of all, the woman that he was referencing was not actually wearing a burka. Therefore, it could have just been a personal choice of choosing to dress modestly, as opposed to it being an actual symbol of any religious affiliation.
Secondly, given that the user admitted he had been ‘joking’ about this topic for a while, it suggested that he frowned upon any concepts associated with or akin to a burka.
Thirdly, the TikToker’s comments had the potential to offend over a billion people who are reportedly part of the Islamic faith. Therefore, it was clear that there was going to be a reaction to his comments.
And so it showed. The video instantly went viral with over half a million views and counting. As a result, many people had a lot to say on this matter and were questioning the motives behind such a video.
And the comments were one of huge condemnation towards the uploader. One person wrote: “Tell me that you’re an Islamophobe with veiled Western third-wave feminism without telling me.”
While another stated: “As always, if the west do it, it’s empowerment if we do it for our belief, it’s oppression.”
Given the huge notoriety that this video had received, the user decided to turn off the comments section on his channel in order to avoid this escalating any further.
