Ever since AEW got their start, they have maintained a strong focus on multi-man matches. They have made tag team wrestling cool once again, by treating the AEW World Tag Team Championships as a legitimate prize to be won – and not an afterthought. However, since the company’s inception – there have been a lot of trios around, but never a prize for that division. With the debut of Kyle O’Reilly completing the Undisputed Era in AEW – is it finally time for trios belts to be brought to the company?
AEW Already Has The Best Trios Division In The World
Next week on AEW programming, we have a heavy focus on trios action. Dynamite has two matches announced in this format, with Best Friends taking on Adam Cole, Bobby Fish & Kyle O’Reilly – and Eddie Kingston teams with Proud & Powerful to take on 2point0 and Daniel Garcia. These are just four teams in AEW that fit into the trios division. More so than even New Japan Pro Wrestling, AEW is rich with strong trios teams.
Others include Gunn Club, Death Triangle, Jurassic Express & Christian Cage, FTR & MJF, CM Punk, Sting & Darby Allin, and more from factions. You can make plenty of options from groups like Hardy Family Office, Inner Circle, The Pinnacle, and The Elite. Once Kenny Omega is back, you even have him and The Young Bucks in the mix – perhaps the best three man unit in wrestling. They already have the best trios division in the world, and it just needs something to fight for.
A Potential Lack Of Focus Could Doom These Belts Like Other Trios Divisions
An argument commonly thrown by fans against this idea is that most trios championships end up becoming wasted space. In NJPW, we only recently saw fans care about the NEVER Openweight Six Man Tag Team Championships, and that was due to YOSHI-HASHI, Tomohiro Ishii & Hirooki Goto always putting their all into every defense… only for the belts to falter again once House of Tortue claimed them.
This is all down to a lack of focus on the belts, which admittedly is something AEW could stumble into. Right now, AEW has four active championships, (five if you count the FTW Championship). A fifth official belt is coming with the AEW TBS Championship. They currently have three hours of TV a week, with extra content coming from Dark & Dark: Elevation.
That’s not a lot of time to highly six sets of champions, which is already felt with four – as some champions just don’t show up on certain weeks. However, if AEW gave the belts to a group like Cole, Fish & O’Reilly and let them run with some creative control? We could have something very fun on our hands.
