Tonight is the first day of the year, and WWE planned on kicking off 2022 with two huge world championship matches. Big E was to defend the WWE Championship against Kevin Owens, Bobby Lashley & Seth Rollins – while Roman Reigns was to defend the WWE Universal Championship against Brock Lesnar. Neither of these matches are now going to go as planned, as Roman Reigns is out from the show.
WWE Confirms Card Change, Adds Brock Lesnar To WWE Championship Match
With Roman Reigns out, the match between him and Brock Lesnar will not be happening tonight.. This was first reported by Ariel Helwani, and quickly confirmed by WWE themselves. It was also confirmed that Reigns has been fully vaccinated, reducing the risk of long term health issues with COVID-19.
This last minute change also added Brock Lesnar to the mix of challengers for the WWE Championship. While this change came late in the day, it does mean we will finally see Lashley & Lesnar meet in the ring – something which has been anticipated for years. It’s very likely these two end up splitting off into their own match, with Lashley perhaps having something to prove here.
Roman Reigns Comments, Will Hopefully Be Back Soon – WWE Universal Championship To Potentially Become Vacant?
Reigns would comment ahead of this match, saying the following. “I yearn to perform tonight at WWE Day 1 to defend my Universal Championship. However, unfortunately, earlier today I tested positive for COVID-19. Due to the proper protocols I am unable to compete as originally scheduled. I look forward to returning to action as soon as possible.”
This would seem to indicate Reigns won’t miss much time – but if he will be out for longer than expected, we could wee the WWE Universal Championship either become vacant – or become the prize for the winner of the Royal Rumble later this month. It would be a shame for the epic reign of Reigns to end like this, but this could finally give someone like Nakamura or Cesaro a chance to become a world champion in WWE.
