Meghan Markle, for her part, recently obtained a victory against ‘The Mail On Sunday’ after they had published the contents of a letter she had sent towards her father Thomas Markle without her consent.
While the newspaper agreed to pay damages, the very fact of the matter is that the ruling has had more of a symbolic function as opposed to a monetary one. According to reports, Meghan will be awarded the sum of $1.40 or 1.20 euros.
This is embarrassing to say the least, especially since her legal costs in fighting the case happened to have totalled £300,000, which is something the newspapers will be responsible for.
This is significant for the following reason. It demonstrates that Meghan Markle was more concerned about protecting her privacy rights rather than any financial costs.
And it also demonstrated her willingness to fight to the end regardless of how much she would have to pay out by way of legal fees if she had lost. This was reflected in the comments that came out following the ruling.
The courts stated the following: “These contents were personal, private, and not matters of legitimate public interest.The articles in the Mail on Sunday interfered with the duchess’s reasonable expectation of privacy.”
Nevertheless, her critics felt that this was a bad PR move. This was because Meghan had apparently decided to give her damages to charity despite it is not being clear whether she would give the small monetary amount or the cost of her legal fees too.
One person on Twitter wrote: “Kinda sweet. She couldn’t have done more damage to herself with all this mess and only the lawyers come out ahead.”
While another person stated: “Did Meghan expose herself as a liar and apologize to the court just to get £1 as compensation? This is hilarious.”
