Candis and Andy Meredith are known for their home renovation prowess and Home Work was proving to be a strong flagship show for Chip and Joanna Gaines’ Magnolia Network. However, that show has gotten the ax after several homeowners have come forward to discuss both bad work by contractors and dealing with the show’s hosts.

Magnolia Network Pulls Home Work After Complaints

The complaints range from being misled about the projects to stuff not turning out how it was discussed. Also annoying is that some plans ran over the intended budget or were never completed.

“Home Work” Gets Axed from the Magnolia Network After Home Renovation Horror Stories Hit Social Media

It’s quite the assortment of complaints and not what you’d expect from a home renovation program with well-known contractors/hosts. The first to speak out about the slipshod work was Aubry Bennion who auditioned in 2019. Bennion ended up being selected and was in for quite an experience.

The issues were numerous according to Bennion starting with communication with Home Work as a whole. She claimed that show host Candis Meredith began making unnecessary suggestions that didn’t help things at all.

One renovation caused problems in an attempt to fix another renovation problem caused by their suggestion. Also, there’s the use of what she claimed were uninsured/unlicensed contractors.

    But There’s More!

Budgets became an issue as well. Bennion said that she was coming in with a $25,000 budget but Candis apparently bumped that up to $40,000 after four months of work. Others came forward about Home Work projects with budgets also being a problem. Teisha Hawley took to Instagram and explained in detail what occurred. On the budget, she said:

“After our meeting and finding out about the blown budget we had multiple conversations via phone, text and email. We were told that we had to wire $10,000 immediately to have anything done. We went back and forth on what to do and what we could financially afford. We had been put in such a hard situation.”

Hawley goes on to detail that Candis was told not to return for more work on her house, that they wouldn’t send any more money, and that her family had lived in demoed houses. Their budget ballooned from the $45,000 they started with to between $80,000 and $85,000 to complete the project.

Vienna Goates also shared her Home Work horror tale on Instagram saying that she and her husband had a lawyer to make Candis Meredith sign a confession of judgment that would force her to pay back their deposit if the work wasn’t completed.

From the previous two stories, you can tell how this ended up. Not only did the couple wire the show hosts $50,000—in February 2020—but didn’t even start on the project months later. What they got back was $14,000 in two separate payments. We can’t forget the excuses as to why couldn’t be paid back in full or the $21,000 upfront.

    Damage Control by the Merediths

With stories coming out that the Merediths were either half-stepping on work that was paid for or pretty much scamming in Goates’ case, the couple eventually got on Instagram to address the recollections—and it’s a long one running for several seven scrolls.

They express that they can understand some of the clients who were extremely inconvenienced by the poor work done but also didn’t care for the stories going public as it paints them unfavorably.

Mind you, the stories became public only after several people couldn’t get the work they asked for, were shelling out more than their declared budget or had to dance around for months to get some of their money back.

All of this resulted in Home Work being dropped from the network’s schedule as things are investigated. An email from Magnolia Network president Allison Page read:

“Magnolia Network is aware that certain homeowners have expressed concerns about renovation projects undertaken by Candis and Andy Meredith. Within the last few days, we have learned additional information about the scope of these issues, and we have decided to remove ‘Home Work’ from the Magnolia Network line up pending a review of the claims that have been made.”
