There is no shortage of challenges gone wrong online and currently, TikTok is cornering the market on it. January’s example—so far—is a Shreveport, Louisiana man setting himself on fire while trying to do the Fire Challenge.
The Fire Challenge Returns Via TikTok
For those who remember, the original Fire Challenge of the early 2010s also resulted in a number of injuries as people covered a hand or their body in a flammable liquid and lit it on fire. The goal is to film it. That’s it.
TikTok Gone Wrong: Louisiana Man Receives 3rd Degree Burns As a Result of Failed TikTok Fire Challenge
You win nothing outside of ridicule if you fail and a tap on the heart if they liked it. Other than that, it’s quite an extreme to go to for props or attempt to go viral.
You’d think with fire being pretty damn dangerous and mostly uncontrollable—to the point that a whole state deals with it every year because it has its own season—people would stop playing with fire. It’s something we should’ve learned as children.
Louisiana Man Survives After Challenge Gone Wrong
Also, this is a challenge from 2012 that honestly should’ve never returned. However, here we are roughly a decade later and a man failed at the challenge on January 2. Shreveport Fire Department chief assistant Clarence Reese called it “a mishap with the fire” which is the kindest way to put this.
The fire started in the bathroom but didn’t spread and no one else in the house was harmed. As for the TikTok daredevil, he made his way to Ochsner LSU Health Shreveport to receive treatment for third-degree burns all over his body. Fortunately, he received medical attention in time as the burns were described as life-threatening.
There’s no update on the man’s condition following his treatment.
