Jordan Huie of the Overtimer here to continue my live coverage of Monday Night Raw! As I type this, the match between Rey Mysterio and AJ Styles, a bout with the WWE United States Championship on the line, just wrapped up. This bout came to be following Mysterio’s initial US title victory over the leader of the OC a couple of weeks ago. That match was the result of Mysterio defeating Drew McIntyre, Ricochet and Randy Orton in a fatal four way match. Immediately after Rey faced off with AJ and defeated him after Orton interfered for an RKO.
The grounds for a rematch were pretty apparent, especially after AJ was on the winning side of a six-man tag match opposite Mysterio the week after. Thus they squared off again here tonight.
It was a fine match as one would expect, and you can see an excerpt of my recap below:
Rey takes AJ up top… wants the Super Rana but AJ blocks it… he wanted to turn it into an Avalanche Styles Clash but he ends up just trying his damnedest to not kill Rey instead as things get messy. So instead, AJ powerbombs Rey and then hoists him right off the mat into the Styles Clash instead, great improvisation! Orton suddenly appears to distract AJ… leaves the ring quickly, AJ grabs Rey – gets caught in an inside cradle and that’s that!
Winner: Rey Mysterio
Aaaand you can really tell that finish got delayed by the botch because they go off the air IMMEDIATELY after the bell, I genuinely don’t even think Rey’s music played. Good match though.
Gotta love what a pro AJ is, making the most he could out of that finish even with the botch. And honestly, it’s for the better, I don’t think I’d like seeing him hit the Super Styles Clash only to lose so quickly after. Way things worked out was much more acceptable if you ask me.
AJ’s issues with Orton continue as he costs him another match with Rey. Just throwing this out there but wouldn’t this make for a great triple threat match for the US title?
